Yamdrok Lake
Yamdrok Lake is counted among the three largest sacred lakes in Tibet. It sprawls over an area of 72 km (45 miles) and charms visitors with its unmatched beauty. Tired souls visit here to steal some moments of peace from the busy life. From here you can catch soul soothing views of snow-capped mountains. Numerous streams merge into this lake, making it a gushing one. The lake has a mythological background too. Locals believe that a goddess took the shape of this lake.
Yamdrok Lake has unknown depth. Here you will find dozen of islands with the largest one being about 3,000 square kilometres. During winter months, the lake remains frozen. Locals of Tibet consider lakes as sacrosanct as they are believed to be dwelling places of protective deities. Thus, they are believed to have special spiritual powers. Devout Buddhists go around the lake on horse to fulfil a ritual which usually takes a month. It is as rewarding as a visit to Lhasa and brings good luck and happiness.
The beauty of Yamdrok Lake is outstanding. Its turquoise colour and perfect backdrop of mountains make it a heaven for photographers. The lake has numerous varieties of fish which are sold in mainland China.
