Buddhism in Bhutan
Buddhism is the major religion followed by the Bhutanese. Their love for their religion and culture is visible in the string of prayer flags along road sides, the numerous prayer wheels surrounding the clock tower in the center of town, the small chortens (small religious temples) and the numerous paintings and offerings on the walls of rock and cement.
About the Statue
The Great Buddha Dordenma is the largest Buddha rupa in the world, standing at a height of 169 feet. You might also be surprised to know that the statue was initially made in China and was later shipped to Bhutan by cutting into pieces. The Buddha statue exudes remarkable views of the beautiful Thimphu Valley.
One of the most interesting features of the Buddha Dodenma Statue is that there are hundred thousand smaller Buddha statues hidden inside it. All these smaller statues are made of bronze with gold polish. Around 100,000 statues are 8 inches tall and 25,000 of these statues height at 12 inches tall. The Great Buddha Dordenma has been placed in the centre of the ruins of Kuensel Phodrang.
The statue cost almost $100 million to build when it was constructed in 2015. Showcasing the prominence of Buddhism in Bhutan, the statue fulfils two prophecies - the first is that a Buddhist statue would be built in the region to “bestow blessings, peace, and happiness to the whole world.” Secondly, the statue is said to have been mentioned by Guru Padmasambhava, widely referred to as the “second Buddha,” in the eighth century.
