Trongsa

Forming the central hub of the nation, Trongsa is the capital of Trongsa District in central Bhutan. Situated on a steep ridge, the town offers spectacular views of the deep valleys surrounding it. The name means "new village" in Dzongkha. The first temple was built in 1543 by the Drukpa lama Ngagi Wangchuck, who was the great-grandfather of Ngawang Namgyal, Zhabdrung Rinpoche, the unifier of Bhutan.

Attractions

Chendbji Chorten - Patterned on Swayambhunath temple in Kathmandu, Chendbji Chorten was built in 18th century by Lama Shida, from Tibet, to cover the remains of an evil spirit that was subdued at this spot.

Trongsa Dzong - The architecture of Trongsa Dzong dominates the entire are, dwarfing the surrounding buildings. Built in the year 1648, the Dzong was the seat of power over central and eastern Bhutan.

Ta Dzong - A cylindrical structure rising five storeys, Ta Dzong was built in the year 1652 by Chogyal Minjur Tempa. After almost 350 years, the Dzong has been resurrected into a classy museum that represents a tasteful blend of tradition and modernity.

Thruepang Palace - This two storied palace is the birth place of the Late King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. It was the winter palace of the second king and is now looked after by the National Commission for Cultural Affairs.
A five-day festival known as the Trongsa tsechu is held in the northern courtyard during December or January. Every monastery in Bhutan observes this festival, which celebrates the arrival of Guru Rimpoche to Bhutan in the 8th century, a mark of triumph of Buddhism over evil. It is held in spring and autumn seasons according to the Bhutanese calendar.

How to reach
The closest airport would be Paro Airport. From Paro, one could then reach Trongsa by cab.

Best time to Visit
November to February is the best time to visit Trongsa. The weather is very pleasant and just right for outdoor activities. The festivals towards the end of November and the month of December only make this period more preferable.
