Rameswaram
Rameshwaram is counted among the holiest places in India. Sitting quietly on the Pamban Island, Rameshwaram is believed to be the place where Lord Rama created a bridge across the sea to rescue his wife from Ravana. The island has numerous tales associated with it and is visited by streams of Hindu devotees from all corners of the world.
Ramanathaswamy Temple is the most popular and visited shrine here. This is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga Temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Its architectural excellence belongs to the 17th century and it is counted among the most fascinating spiritual tourism destination. The temple houses the longest temple corridor on the planet which is 197 meters long. Jada Tirtham is another popular place of importance among Hindu devotees. It is around 3.5km from Ramanathaswamy Temple and people visit here for the sacred pond. It is said that Lord Rama washed his hair at this place before worshipping Shiva after his victory over Ravana. This is the only place in the country where Lord Kapardisvara is worshipped.
Travellers must also add Dhanushkodi Temple to their holiday itinerary to Rameshwaram. Even though the temple is in ruins today, it has great significance in different versions of the Ramayana. The beauty of Gandhamadhana Parvatham in Rameshwaram is simple yet unique. This is the Parvatham which Lord Hanuman carried to save Laxman. It is believed to be the highest point in Rameshwaram and is perfect to enjoy bird’s eye views of the surrounding areas.
Adam’s Bridge is another popular attraction in Rameshwaram. This ancient bridge connects Rameshwaram to the north-western coast of Sri Lanka and is still a mystery. Rameshwaram also has a beautiful Water Bird Sanctuary where you can catch views of many migratory water birds apart from native birds. Visitors can also feed birds here.
